Whether you’re part of a group for luxury yacht charter or have been invited onto a private yacht for a day (or longer), there are some basic things to think about and know before setting sail. Some of it is common sense, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be considered when running down a list.
Safety is key in yachting and marine electronics are crucial to safety. Make sure your safety equipment and electronics are working properly before leaving the dock.
For longer yachting adventures, make sure any special medications are brought along since destinations may not be able to fill prescriptions. And while many yachts will have seasickness medication for emergencies, it never hurts to bring your own.
Standard shoes are rarely allowed on a ship’s deck, so bring sandals, flip-flops or light colored deck shoes to wear aboard. Also don’t forget plenty of sunscreen. Chances are you will be outside most of the time and it will be needed to prevent burns.
When packing for a yachting adventure, consider the weather for the trip. Most will take place during sunny weather and therefore packing light is a smart option. Having a few swimsuits is a good idea, but there’s no need to pack towels, as they will be provided on board. Keep your luggage soft or use duffel bags as it will store easier in the smaller compartments of a yacht and also cause less damage. Don’t bring any ‘wheeled’ luggage on board as the rollers can mar the deck of a beautiful superyacht.
Don’t forget the camera to document what will surely be a one-of-a-kind adventure. Check with your host or the charter company for more tips on what to bring before boarding the yacht.
